The Mondrian Gold Coast is a luxury 5-star hotel and residence located at Burleigh Heads, comprising two 22-storey towers connected by a three-level podium. Opened in June 2025, the development features a striking third-floor pool deck and atrium with panoramic beachfront views.
BSF Design Solutions was approached by Hutchinson Builders to develop an alternative to the originally proposed GRC panels for a series of curved concrete vaults wrapping three sides of the podium. Each dome shape was formed from multiple radii and needed to align precisely with installed precast panels. The vaults were to be suspended from an existing concrete slab already congested with PT strands, pipes, and electrical conduits—posing a significant coordination and installation challenge.
In collaboration with Projex Partners, BSF designed a lightweight steel frame using rolled Circular Hollow Section (CHS) members, interconnected to form the complex multi-radius dome geometry. Concrete scanning was undertaken to accurately map embedded services, ensuring anchor locations avoided critical elements. The steel frame supported reinforcing for shotcrete, which was applied on site to form the final smooth, curved finish.
This innovative approach eliminated the need for GRC panels and allowed for faster, safer installation while achieving the desired architectural outcome. The project is a testament to the expertise and collaboration within the Beenleigh Steel group, from design through to fabrication and erection.
