The Mondrian Gold Coast is a landmark 5-star hotel and residential development located in Burleigh Heads. Comprising two 22-storey towers joined by a three-level podium, the project opened in June 2025 and features a signature third-floor pool deck and atrium with uninterrupted beachfront views.
The design challenge involved creating a glazed awning to span the13-metre gap between the towers. The awning needed to maintain minimal roof slope to preserve views from the windows above, while also ensuring generous head clearance for the spa and bar areas below—all without the use of supporting columns.
BSF Design Solutions, working in collaboration with Projex Partners, Havendeen, and G James, engineered a bespoke awning system that met the project's complex architectural and environmental requirements. Given the site's coastal exposure, durability and corrosion resistance were key considerations.
The final solution featured custom-fabricated cranked rafters supporting a mixed roof of aluminum sheeting and tinted glazing. A key technical challenge was securing the structure to the towers’ curved precast facades while maintaining the premium aesthetic associated with Mondrian Hotels.
This project showcases the value of close collaboration across engineering, fabrication, and detailing teams, and reflects BSF Design Solutions’ commitment to delivering innovative and high-quality outcomes in complex architectural environments.
