The Queensland Train Manufacturing Program (QTMP) was initiated to meet the rising demand for rail transport across Southeast Queensland over the coming decade. As part of this initiative, 65 new six-car passenger trains will be manufactured at a purpose-built facility in Torbanlea, located in the Maryborough region. In addition, a new rail maintenance facility is being developed at Ormeau on the Gold Coast.
BSF Design Solutions was engaged to provide detailed steelwork modelling and shop detailing for several key structures within the program, including the Manufacturing, Static Test, Static Gauge, Maintenance, and Gatehouse buildings. The combined scope of work accounted for approximately 1,900 tonnes of structural steel.
The project was delivered under a highly compressed schedule, requiring BSF Design Solutions to begin detailing from pre-IFC (Issued for Construction) drawings. Close collaboration with the design team was essential, and weekly coordination meetings were held to review construction methodology, material availability, service integration, and connection detailing. This proactive approach enabled the team to confidently progress detailing ahead of final IFC documentation.
- Advanced procurement of long lead-time WB sections ensured fabrication timelines were met.
- Steelwork for initial phases was released for fabrication prior to IFC issue.
- The 1,600-tonne Manufacturing Building progressed from initial design to IFC status in just seven months.
